Why Fitness is just as important as Other Subjects in School

Many people are under the impression that physical education within schools is less important than other subjects and used for fitness reasons only. However, whilst this is a benefit of physical education, it is not the only advantage.

Physical education allows students to develop their motor skills, as well as their knowledge and behaviour towards a healthy way of living. It also permits education in sportsmanship, working as a team and emotions. Whilst fitness in schools wholeheartedly promotes exercise and health within a student, it also helps the development of the individual as a whole.

Without physical education, a child is unaware of how to exercise or what a balanced diet is. If this were the case, our children would be at risk of a range of health related issues, including diabetes and obesity. In 2015/16, statistics showed that 20% of children aged 10-11 were obese, with a further 14% overweight. This number is continuing to rise, proving that the need for physical education and knowledge of fitness to be taught within schools from a young age is extremely important.

Physical education within schools also plays a part in improved academic productivity. Regular, high performance activity is associated with high concentration levels, as well as better behaviour. It is also one of the only lessons taught in schools that encourages social interactions, helping children to learn to cooperate in group activities and teams. Teamwork is extremely important in all aspects of life, particularly as we continue to grow. Teams that are able to work well amongst one another are able to understand the strengths and weaknesses amongst a number of people.
