How to Child Proof Furniture

Whether you need furniture for nursery children or school children of all ages, it’s vital to ensure your furnishings are resistant to the hardships that come with being around kids. We’ve put together our top tips for child-proofing the furniture within all learning environments.

Use Soft Furnishings

This tip is specifically necessary for nurseries. Falls are unavoidable by all children, though they’ll happen a little more often with younger children. Look for areas you can soften up. For example, soft rugs over hard wood flooring is ideal in learning environments. Tables with sharp edges can be dangerous to young children, so aim for rounded edges or cushioned corners to prevent any injuries. Our early year’s tables are ideal for nurseries and kindergartens, as they all feature rounded edges and look great and exciting in a younger learning environment.

Is it Sturdy?

When choosing new furniture, you need to ensure it’s sturdy. Young children will be pushing and pulling furniture, especially at a young age. Avoid the inevitable by choosing heavy yet sturdy furnishings to ensure they’re difficult to move. You can be assured that all educational furniture supplied at The Essex Group is created with child safety in mind and has optimum sturdiness.

Can you easily wipe it?

Dirt and mess on tables, chairs and desks will not cause an issue if you are mindful when buying the furniture. Don’t opt for materials like linen or suede, as these are difficult to clean. Remain on the lookout for materials that are easy to wipe down, such as vinyl or leather. Traditional wooden desks can be difficult to clean, though there are alternatives like particle board. The majority of our educational seating is created from materials that are both comfortable to sit at and easy to clean.

Don’t forget!

Often schools and nurseries will have areas specialised for televisions, computers and other electronics. Make sure all cables are out of reach and away from children, which could cause harm to them and become a costly repair for the school! Electric screens are the ideal replacement for televisions in classrooms and are durably mounted to walls meaning wires can be tucked away neatly and discreetly.

Here at The Essex Group, our furniture is designed with children in mind to supply you with comfortable, durable items that are perfect in schools and nurseries. If you would like more information, feel free to contact the team on 0845 1700 222.
